Dear Readers - all 4 of you ;)
I wanted to write about something profound, something new, or at least offer a fresh perspective on a concept which might motivate and inspire. Beginning with my thoughts on first person perspective and how at times, it feels like “telling,” I set out to write a brief essay. That is, until I saw an excellent article online talking about this very same topic. Another subject I had intended to explore, word economy and what songs could teach us. Then I wanted to talk about procrastination, but I never got around to it. Okay, that joke was lame. Next, well, I don’t even remember. Doesn’t matter. Not the point.
What I do remember is that I’ve been told to forget about trying to come up with something original. Everything’s been done before. What makes something new and different is your own personal take on it. An idea I find to be quite liberating actually because I can’t tell you how many times, I’ve been stymied after coming up with an idea for a story only to see something similar has already been written. It also reminded me that this blog isn’t necessarily supposed to be instructional. While I’m happy to share my insights and pass along information that I have found useful, that’s not what this blog was designed to do. There is a ton of great information out there about the craft and while I’ve learned a lot (a never ending journey in my opinion) I want to focus on my own personal journey.
Could this be useful to readers? Perhaps. Can it entertain? That remains to be seen. But since this whole blog thing is new for me and somewhat experimental, we'll have to wait and see.
I’d like to invite others to share their stories here. Whether it be a true story, something you've experienced or a fiction piece that you'd like to share with the world online, please post. (Just remember, if you post it here, it cannot be something that you are hoping to sell or have published professionally.)
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and stories and getting to know new people.
