“I remember when my biggest goal in life was to beat my best friend Steve at…well…pretty much anything.”
“How so Uncle Doug?”
“When we were kids we were always doing stupid things to see who was tougher, braver, stronger – our own version of Fear Factor. Like the time we tried to see who could eat the most worms before puking. Or who could withstand being hit in the butt the most times with a snow shovel. Steve always won of course. He beat me at everything. He was always first. Always the winner.”
I point to an old black and white photo. “You can’t tell from the picture, but Steve actually won the pie eating contest. That’s him on the left. I’m the one in the middle.”
“He’s bigger than you.”
“Yeah, and faster too.”
A woman enters the room without acknowledging us. She’s dressed conservatively with the exception of her shoes, which are purple.
“Is that his wife?” my nephew whispers. “She’s pretty.”
“Sheryl. I used to have a crush on her,” I say giving him a weak smile. Everyone likes Steve.
He’d been the first to lose his virginity, the first to buy beer and the first to get married. After a successful tour in the Marines he joined the police force. Just a few years later Steve was the first in his division to be promoted to captain. Hell, leftovers from last week’s celebratory feast still sat in my fridge. A tap on my shoulder interrupted my thoughts.
“Mr. Harris, they're ready for you to give the eulogy.”
I am going to keep this open for another couple of weeks. So please feel free to post. I think I would like to try making the Tuesday challenge a bi weekly event. Next time however, you can actually post on Tuesday, February 17th as it will be an actual Tuesday.
When I set up this challenge, I was thinking that the stories would be sent to me and I would post them on my site and readers would enjoy them on Tuesday - hence the name Tuesday Tales. Then I found out about inlinkz and realized that people could post to their own sites. With that in mind, the next challenge will actual be on a Tuesday. February 17. This will be a bi weekly event. But if you have something to post between now and then, please do so. I’d love to read your story.
